MYSORE DASARA :
Mysore or Mysooru (Kannada/Telugu) is a city located in South of Indian state Karnataka. Mysore is well connected by Road and Rail and is just 140 kms away from Kannada capital Bangalore/Bengaluru. The population of the city is around 9,00,000 lakhs according to 2011 Indian census. The three main amazing things that first strike to our mind as soon as we hear the term 'Mysore' are Mysore Dasara, Mysore Palace and Mysore Bonda. Mysore Dasara is the 'Nadahabba' (state festival) of Karnataka.
DASARA in Mysore, Karnataka is celebrated on a grand stage that too with style, tradition and devotion. Festivities were first started in the year 1610 AD by the King Raja Wodeyar I (1578 - 1617 AD). On the top of Chamundi Hill in Mysore, there is a temple of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the festivities begin after the couple Raja Wodeyar I and his wife performing Puja to the Goddess. In the year of 1805 AD, Krishnaraja Wodeyar III started the tradition of having the Dasara celebrations on a grand scale which were attended by members of the royal family, officials and masses.
DASARA PROCESSION :
Dasara or Dussehra is a ten day festival also called as the Navaratri(nine-nights). The eighth day of the festival is called Durgashtami, the ninth day as Maharnavami and the tenth day is the most important day called as Vijayadasami. The Mysore Palace is illuminated with nearly 1 lakh light bulbs for the whole of ten days during the nights. Nearly RS 1 crore is spent on the lightening effects alone. The traditional JUMBOO SAVAN (Dasara Procession) is held on the streets of Mysore City on the Vijayadashami day. On the top of decorated elephant with the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is placed in a Mantapa which is the main highlight of the Mysore Dasara. This idol is worshiped by all the royal members, various dignitaries and also general audience. The procession starts from the Mysore Palace along with the Elephant with the idol and various other sidelights like Dance troops, Music Bands, Horses, Camels, etc and culminates at a place called BANNIMANTAP where the Banni(Prosopis Spicigera) tree is worshiped. In Telugu, it is called JAMMI tree. This place provides you with the images of the Mysore Dasara 2012 celebrations where various cultural events, sports, quiz, etc and etc will be held.
